I watch a lot of food shows… I mean A LOT of food shows. And there’s nothing I find myself drooling over more than all the crazy burger concoctions the country has to offer. Recently, a couple of regional favorites not found in my neck of the woods really sparked my culinary curiosity. Rather than trying them individually, I opted to fuse the two together for one all-out kitchen experiment. Here enters the Steamed Juicy Lucy. A cheese stuffed burger steamed to seal in its juices and flavor. Yes, that’s right, the girl who grills everything has taken on steaming what might arguably be the one food item made only for the grill. What can I say?… I guess I’m just a bit of a rebel. So here goes, it’s time to step a bit out of the box to receive a big flavor payoff. This recipe just might have you pulling out your rice cooker and saving the grill space for your fruit kebabs this 4th of July too.
1 lb ground beef
8 slices bacon, finely chopped
salt and pepper to taste
4 slices cheese
4 hamburger buns
Using your hands, mix together ground beef, bacon, egg, salt and pepper until incorporated.
Divide mixture into four portions. Separate each portion in half and flatten into two thin patties.
Fold cheese slice in half then in half again and place the square into the center of one patty. Top with other patty and pinch sides to create a complete seal around the edges. Repeat with remaining patties.
Place patties into your Steam Tray and steam for 12-15 minutes. Check for doneness then let patties rest for 1-2 minutes. Stick ’em between buns and enjoy!
